Despite a rich culture in regional cuisine, that basic and super easy breakfast fare will surprise you. Moreover, it is a very common and standard dish all across the country. Typical items include fresh white bread, a slice or two of Turkish cheese-like white cheese or ‘kaşar’ cheese. It also includes black olives, sliced tomatoes and cucumbers, and either honey or fruit preserves.

Now it’s time to do as Turkish people do. By doing so, we are going to embellish this basic fare to create a magnificent breakfast line-up. A perfect dish to add is a light, juicy scramble of diced vegetables and eggs called menemen. Imagine you’re a fan of vegetable and Mexican omelettes. Then, you are at a very true place that you will definitely enjoy this dish.

Don’t Forget to Have These With Menemen

When you serve menemen, make sure you have slices of crusty bread for dipping in the buttery juice. For a traditional touch, you can cook and serve your menemen in a typical Turkish copper skillet called a sahan. Try menemen the next time you’re dreaming of a veggie omelette and add some Turkish flare to your next breakfast.

How to Cook Easy Menemen at Your Home?

1- First of all, gather the ingredients.

2- Then, you must peel and dice the onion.

3- After that, peel the tomatoes with a sharp knife and dice them, saving the juice. It is very important that tomato must be fresh and juicy. Because this is the main point for the menemen to be delicious.

Selection of tomatoes is the most important and crucial part of cooking menemen.

Rest of the Steps…

4- And then, remove the seeds from the peppers and dice them as well.

5- Later on, you need to melt the butter in a large skillet. Sauté the onion until tender and translucent.

6- When you are done with cooking onions, add all the diced vegetables and spices and stir to combine.

7- Afterwards, bring the mixture to a boil, then cover and reduce the heat. Let the mixture simmer gently until the tomatoes and peppers soften. Thus, the mixture will release its natural juice which will make the menemen have the perfect and original flavour.

8- Remove the lid and continue to simmer, letting some of the liquid evaporate.

9- Then, you had better lightly salt and scramble the eggs in a separate bowl.

10- Later on, pour them in the centre of the pan. Don’t stir the mixture. Let the eggs travel through the vegetables on their own. You can help them by moving the skillet around.

11- Let the mixture continue to simmer until the eggs are cooked. If the tops of the eggs still seem raw, cover the pan for a few minutes.

Tips:

  • Your menemen should be fully cooked but still very juicy. You can drizzle some extra melted butter over the top before serving if you wish.
  • Make sure you have slices of crusty bread for dipping in the buttery juice.

Bonus!

Here is the biggest argument over the cooking way of Menemen: With or without onion? Yes, you are not mistaken! This debate on menemen whether it is better with onion or without has been on the agenda for centuries! However, we are not going to share our idea here to let you give your own decision by trying both ways. And give your own decision. Either way, it is out-of-question that menemen is definitely one of the most common and famous dishes of Turkish cuisine.

Serve and enjoy!
