‘Love 101’, also known as ‘Aşk 101’ is Netflix’s third Turkish original series after ‘The Protector’ and ‘The Gift’. Both of them were instant hits with audiences worldwide and now, it looks like ‘Love 101’, a teen drama is also raking up positive reviews. What is the Story of Love 101?
Set primarily in 1998, ‘Love 101’ tells the story of five teenagers — four misfits and one model student. The four misfits are Kerem (played by Kubilay Aka), Eda (played by Alina Boz), Osman (played by Selahattin Paşalı), and Sinan (played by Mert Yazıcıoğlu). All come from different circles and none of them are friends, but they all get into trouble repeatedly.
All four have gone to the school board multiple times and face the threat of expulsion. In the first episode of ‘Love 101’, the board asked these students to behave themselves. However, in one way or another, they do things separately that end up nearly burning down the school. The head of the school and most teachers have had enough and they are ready to expel them. The only person who saves them is Miss Burcu (played by Pınar Deniz). She is, by the way, the Vice-Principal. Miss Burcu is the only one who stands between them and expulsion yet again.
Struggle to Keep Burcu at School Brings Solidarity Among Misfits
And so, when they get the news that Burcu is set to be transferred at the end of the school year, the four misfits decide to work together to make her stay in school. Hence, they begin to plan to do so by getting her to fall in love. The address is the handsome and idealist teacher of the school: Kemal (played by Kaan Urgancıoğlu). Those names, in the meantime, make up the main cast of ‘Love 101’ — Aşk 101. However, they realize neither of them knows anything about love. Therefore, they rope in Işık (played by İpek Filiz Yazıcı) who loves romantic movies and love in a broad sense.
Controversies on Netflix’s New Turkish “Dramedy”
After a fan account of the show tweeted “We are dark people under the colorful rainbow! Osman?”, the dispute began. People thought the account was an official account and that the character Osman was homosexual. This caused an uproar among the conservative users of Netflix. So, they claimed that releasing Netflix tried to assault Islam and the Ottoman Empire by naming the homosexual character Osman. The name of Osman is, by the way, the third caliph of Islam and also the founder of the Ottoman Empire’s name.
Further, releasing the show on the first of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan was another reason for the controversy. Many have claimed that they canceled their subscription to Netflix on the idea that they insulted Islam culture. After Netflix Turkey released the show, there were no signs of Osman being homosexual. On the other hand, the length of the episodes varies in the show between 35 and 45 minutes. Most people also considered this as a piece of evidence that Netflix has deleted some scenes where Osman was homosexual. There are currently no explanations from Netflix on this subject.
