The banter between two Istanbul district municipalities about who had the best views turned into a nationwide competition. So, the competition as we named it is the Best View Competition. While the two Istanbul municipalities also compared accomplishments, municipalities from around Turkey sent in their best shots.

How did the Best View Competition Begin?

Two Istanbul district municipalities got into a brawl about who had better views on Sept. 5. However, the joke quickly escalated into a competition of “god-given beauty” versus accomplishments. And eventually, municipalities from around the country involved this funny game.

The tweeter is The Battle Field!

Istanbul’s Sarıyer Municipality takes place in the northern part of the city’s European side. The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), on the other hand, governs the municipality. So, they tweeted a photo of the Bosphorus Bridge at night and started the competition.

“What am I, the district municipality with the world’s best view?” tweeted the Sarıyer Municipality on Sept. 5.

Best View Competition Escalated with Istanbul’s Üsküdar Municipality

The Anatolian side’s Üsküdar Municipality quickly responded to Sarıyer Municipality. For doing so, they quoted a song that tells the listener to “check yourself.” Üsküdar Municipality is governed by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). So, the municipality shared photos of the Maiden’s Tower, a small building on an islet in the Bosphorus. By the way, the tower dates back to the Byzantine era. What’s more, most people believe that the Byzantine ruler constructed the building to serve for military purposes.

An Answer with One of Beren Saat’s Former Roles

As a follow-up, Üsküdar Municipality said that they preferred to be in the limelight for their accomplishments, and not their “god-given beauty.”

As a response, Sarıyer Municipality sent Üsküdar a meme from the iconic Turkish television series Aşk-ı Memnu. The lead actress Beren Saat smiles in the series with a caption that reads “You really think you’re something, makes me sad.”

"You really think you’re something, makes me sad."

“All that was fun, but we’re actually a municipality that enjoys being talked about for our accomplishments and not our god-given beauty. So you should get us off of this mention. Have a nice day, love ❤️️ ,” Üsküdar Municipality told the main opposition Sarıyer Municipality.

“Thankfully, we can be talked about for both our accomplishments and our god-given beauty. We coined this area with our hashtag [“10 years in service”]. You can search for it to see our exemplary work. Love, ❤️️ ” Sarıyer Municipality responded.

Tweets of Turkey’s Other Municipalities

District Municipalities from all around Turkey responded to the two Istanbul municipalities’ banter with views of their own.

Marmaris, a southwestern vacation destination, said that “Marmaris comes to mind when you think of views.”

Ölüdeniz, located in the southwestern vacation destination Fethiye, is “the best view in the world,” Fethiye Municipality said.

The northern district of Eynesil shared a shot of the sun setting over the Black Sea. They asked if they’re the “world’s district with the best sunset views or something.”

Another northern district, Saray Municipality asked: “which Black Sea region has the best shoreline.”

Meanwhile, Mediterranean Antalya’s Konyaalti Municipality quoted Turkey’s founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk for having said that the province was “the most beautiful” in the world.
