56th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival: 26 October

Pleasing days for Turkish cinema has just started today! The “beating heart” of Turkish national cinema is going to accelerate with the 56th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival. So, the festival, which has begun today, and it will continue until the 1st of November. Thus, it will be a 6-days-cinema paradise. And by the way, no need to mention that Antalya is the host city of the festival as it has been for 56 years.

This year’s theme of the festival is “Return to Essence”. On the other hand, 66 films of 69 directors from 29 different countries will be on the screens at the festival. As another crucial detail, Türkan Şoray‘s iconic picture will take place on the festival’s official flyer. Türkan Şoray is one of the most talented and master actress of Turkish cinema. What’s more, the veteran actress is the first actress who won this award.

A Short Story of Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival

The 56th Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival 2019 (Antalya Altın Portakal Film Festivali 2019) inaugurated in 1964 at the initiation of Dr Avni Tolunay. The Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival has evolved over the years. Furthermore, the festival made it into the beating heart of Turkish national cinema.

The festival left marking a crucial launch pad in the careers of many outstanding filmmakers. Some of these names are veteran directors of Turkish cinema. For example, Metin Erksan, Yılmaz Güney, Bilge Olgaç, Atıf Yılmaz, Yavuz Turgul, Ömer Kavur are some of them. And moreover, as for the modern directors are Zeki Demirkubuz, Yeşim Ustaoğlu, Nuri Bilge Ceylan and Reha Erdem.

The master director Zeki Demirkubuz is the president of National Feature Film Competition Jury.

On the other hand, the Festival introduced the Antalya Film Forum with a view to making a tangible contribution to Turkish cinema. In this respect, the forum has transformed Antalya into the hub of the national film industry. Furthermore, the forum has been providing support to large numbers of young and independent filmmakers. So, the event comprises four different platforms. As for the platforms, they are Fiction Pitching, Fiction Work in Progress, Documentary Work in Progress and the Sümer Tilmaç Antalya Film Support Fund.

The Antalya Film Forum has played a key role in the creation of many Turkish films during their production journey. At this point, it includes national and international festival award-winners. For instance, Kelebekler (Butterflies, Tolga Karaçelik), Kız Kardeşler (A Tale of Three Sisters, Emin Alper), Daha (More, Onur Saylak). Other award winners are Güvercin (The Pigeon, Banu Sıvacı), Borç (Debt, Vuslat Saraçoğlu), Son Çıkış (Siren’s Call, Ramin Matin), Mr Gay Syria (Ayşe Toprak) and Güven (Trust, Sefa Öztürk).

Today, the Antalya Golden Orange Film Festival is regarded as one of the most prestigious film festivals in Asia and Europe. The festival is attracting to the Mediterranean city celebrity guests from around the world. For instance, István Szabó, Francis Ford Coppola, Emir Kusturica, Catherine Deneuve, Bob Rafelson. In addition to these names, the master directors of New Iran Cinema Abbas Kiarostami, Bahman Ghobadi, Asghar Farhadi were also the guests of the festival. Other world-famous names are Theresa Russell, Krzysztof Zanussi, Helen Mirren, Paul Verhoeven, Faye Dunaway, Harvey Keitel, Mickey Rourke, Audrey Tautou and Adrien Brody.

The Antalya Golden Orange has earned recognition by FIAPF (International Federation of Film Producers’ Associations). Thanks to this recognition, the festival has joint the ranks of the world’s premier film festivals. It could be possible as a reflection of the quality standards achieved in its organization.
